Sleep debt is real, and you can pay it down

You cannot bank sleep in advance. You can, however, dig out of a hole — if you know how deep it is.

Someone asleep, head resting on a pillow.

Ask most people how they slept and you get a number of hours. Ask their body and you get a different answer entirely, because the question is not how long you were in bed — it is how much of what you needed you actually got.

Need is not a fixed number

Your sleep need moves. A day with a heavy training load, a long drive, a fever coming on, or simply a great deal of stress raises it. Kairo estimates need from the day you actually had, then measures the shortfall. That shortfall, accumulated, is your sleep debt.

Sleep 74 — you got roughly three quarters of what your body asked for last night.

Why the Saturday lie-in does not fix it

Recovery sleep is real but partial. Sleeping four extra hours on Saturday recovers some of the deficit, mostly the deep-sleep component, and much less of the alertness cost. Worse, a large weekend shift moves your body clock later, which makes Sunday night harder and Monday worse. The pattern has a name — social jetlag — and it is measurable on a wrist.

What actually works

  • Move your bedtime earlier in 15-minute steps, not one heroic 90-minute jump.
  • Hold your wake time steady, even after a bad night. The wake time is the anchor.
  • Pay debt down across several nights rather than one. Three nights of plus-45 minutes beats one night of plus-three-hours.
  • Treat the first hour after waking as light-seeking time — step outside, even briefly.

Consistency is worth more than duration. A steady seven beats a ragged eight.
